About
Laney Griner uploaded the photo of her young son to Flickr on 31 August 2007 under the title “Why I oughta...”. In 2011 it took off with the caption “I hate sandcastles”, and was soon recast as an image for triumphs, no matter how minor: finding money in an old coat, a printer that works.
It became a founding template of Advice Animals on Reddit and, unusually, stayed in the hands of its family. Griner registered the copyright in 2012, and the image was later used by the White House in 2013 for immigration reform messaging.
