About
The image comes from “On Fire”, a webcomic by KC Green published in the Gunshow series on 9 January 2013. Two panels, a dog with a cup of coffee in a room consumed by flames and the line “This is fine”, became a way to describe any situation that is clearly going wrong but is being ignored. In the full comic, the dog’s face eventually melts.
It spread on Reddit and Tumblr from 2014 and has been a recurring reaction ever since, especially in news cycles and crises. The index shows resurgences in 2016 and 2020, a period in which many people found its tone of calm despair fitting.
