About
Barbie and Oppenheimer were both released on 21 July 2023. One was a candy-coloured comedy directed by Greta Gerwig, the other a three-hour historical drama directed by Christopher Nolan. The tonal contrast was irresistible, and weeks before release audiences began combining them in posters, memes and plans for double features.
Barbenheimer, as the pairing was called, turned a scheduling accident into a cultural event. Both films opened strongly, and Barbie went on to pass one billion dollars at the global box office.
