Charli XCX released the album Brat on 7 June 2024. Its imperfect, party-hard aesthetic spread instantly: the album art was recreated by fans and brands, a Brat Generator let anyone make their own, and “brat” came to describe a way of being.
The movement crossed into politics when, after President Biden withdrew from the 2024 race, Charli XCX posted that “kamala IS brat” and the Harris campaign adopted the style for its social accounts. In September she declared brat summer over, and Collins Dictionary named “brat” its word of the year in November.
